Fundraising for school has often been tainted with pies and chocolates. There is a strong movement to introduce eco-friendly and sustainable fundraising ideas for schools avoiding the pressure it either eat the entire box of chocolate ourselves or end up with a freezer full of pies. A truly sustainable fundraiser is one that promotes products that are not only kind to the planet but kind to family’s wallets! With the ‘cost of living’ increasing, it’s nice to not have to hand over money for products you don’t really need. I have discovered some great Eco-friendly and sustainable fundraisers that are good for our kids, great for the planet and kind to your wallet!
Here are my favourite eco-friendly and sustainable fundraising ideas for your school:
1. Loose change fundraiser
Over a period of time, every class is given a challenge to collect loose change (who wants those 5 cent pieces anyway?) The class with the most amount collected after the challenge is the winner and receives a prize! Anything that involves food, like a pizza party is a great incentive! Getting the students to count the money and possibly take it to the bank for an excursion is a great mathematics and life skill.
2. The Drink Bottle Fundraiser
Plastic drink bottles are one of the world’s worst offenders when it comes to waste. Nearly 90% of plastic drink bottles are not recycled and end up n landfill. This fundraiser sells stainless steel drink bottles that can be personalised with your child’s name. You can also choose from 20 images to have printed on the bottle, or better yet your school logo!. How good would this be as the first fundraiser at the start of the year. Drink bottles come in 2 sizes with $5 being made from each bottle sale. More info here.
3. Honeybee wraps
These wraps I personally love and make a super sustainable fundraising option. The reusable wraps are made from 100% organic cotton, natural beeswax, jojoba oil, coconut oil and tree resin. These flexible wraps mould over the top of a dish or can wrap cheese, vegetables and sandwiches. Think how much glad wrap that you will save from going into landfill! These wraps are so easy to wash and even better are made right here in Australia developed by a Mum! Prices start at $14 and your school receives 50% of all sales made! Check them out.
4. Zero Co
Sign up for the Zero Co’s sustainable schools program and they’ll build you a bespoke online fundraising page just for your school. Once your fundraising page is live, share it with your community and earn up to $40 for your school with every sale. At the conclusion of your campaign you’ll be paid automatically via the online payments platform and the orders delivered directly to your school. For every $10 you raise they take 1KG of plastic out of the ocean on your school’s behalf. More info here.
5. Wear your coat to school day
This one is best during the colder months. You will also save your school some money on power and saving power is great for the environment too! During winter, choose a day to turn the heating right down and get the students to wear a coat or Oodie to school and even bring a doona! Ask them to bring along their own mug or keep cup and raise some funds by serving hot chocolate.
6. Second hand clothes market
Everyone has clothes in the cupboard that are still in great nic that we’re sick of wearing! A second hand clothes market at school will help you raise funds and repurpose unwanted clothes! Roughly 10kg of clothes per person is sent to landfill each year in Australia. Clean out your closets and purchase a stall from the school market to sell these unwanted clothes.
7. The Boo Collective
The products offered in this fundraiser are everyday items, at a very reasonable cost to families. Now that’s sustainable! Hopefully everyone brushes their teeth? Customised order forms are provided along with a display poster in PDF format. Products are sent to your school in bulk for you to distribute with 40% of all sales returned to your school. Their giveback program is a second option for those wanting to do a little less. Submit your school and once approved, you will receive a GIVEBACK code to use on their online store. Share the code with your friends, family and community.
Orders are sent directly to the family with 25% of all orders placed using the code will be given back This is an ongoing program with commission from orders given back at the end of the month, every month!
About The Boo Collective: We are a small family run business from regional Victoria passionate about bamboo and sustainability. We embarked on this journey to raise more aware children, educating them (and ourselves along the way) to switch to better ‘waste free’ or less waste alternatives.
One thing though… we quickly grew tired of trying to find different coloured or shaped bamboo toothbrushes so our kids would stop using ‘anyone’s’ brush (yuk)! The idea came “Why not get some made that have different coloured handles and bristles!” So here we are, with what we consider to be a pretty awesome range of funky bamboo toothbrushes for the whole family. Realising the amazing qualities and benefits of bamboo we added more products to our range.
